Before you start: switch to a professional account
Every auto-reply option — Instagram’s own and every tool built on Meta’s API — needs an Instagram professional account. In the Instagram app go to Settings → Account type and tools → Switch to professional account, and pick Creator or Business. It is free, takes a minute and doesn’t change your posts or followers.
Option 1: Saved replies (quick replies)
Saved replies let you store a message you send often — your prices, your hours, a link — under a short shortcut. In a chat, type the shortcut and Instagram offers the full message; tap it, edit if you like, and send.
Open the saved replies settings
From your profile, open the menu and go to the creator or business tools section, then Saved replies. (Menu names change between app versions.)
Add a reply
Tap + , write the full message and give it a one-word shortcut such as “price” or “links”.
Use it in a chat
Type the shortcut in the message bar and tap the suggestion that appears.
Good for: answering faster yourself. Not for: replying while you sleep — a person still has to open each chat and send. Setup and 30 examples: Instagram quick replies.
Option 2: FAQs in chats
You can add up to four frequently asked questions that appear when someone opens a chat with you. They tap one and get your answer instantly. Set them up in the Instagram app under Messages → Tools → Frequently asked questions.
Good for: the four questions everyone asks first. Not for: anything people type in their own words — the FAQ only answers when they tap the question.
Option 3: Meta Business Suite automations
In Meta Business Suite’s Inbox you can set automated responses for Instagram: an instant reply to the first message, an away message outside your hours, ready-made answers for location, contact details and hours, custom keyword replies and comment to message, which replies to comments that contain specific hashtags. The last two are only on the Business Suite desktop experience.
- A keyword reply can match up to 5 keywords or phrases, and keywords are case-sensitive — “Price” and “price” are different.
- Each keyword can only belong to one automation.
- Replies can include photos, videos, buttons and links.
- A keyword reply goes out after 15 minutes, and only if you haven’t answered yourself by then — it is a safety net, not an instant answer.
- If a preset reply (like the away message) and a keyword reply are both triggered, Meta sends the preset one.
- If you turn on Meta Business Agent, Meta’s own AI agent, your other Inbox automations are paused.
Good for: simple, predictable questions with a fixed answer. Not for: messages that don’t contain your exact keyword — “how much for the course?” won’t trigger a “price” rule — or for answering in seconds.
Where the built-in tools stop
All three are free and worth turning on. But people don’t write in keywords. They ask “do you ship to Lisbon?”, send a voice note, reply to your story with “link?” or comment “how do I join” under a reel. Rules that only match exact words miss most of that — and each miss is a lead that waits until you open the app.
Option 4: An AI auto-responder
An AI auto-responder reads what the person actually wrote and answers from information you give it. With ohyap, you write a short Knowledge Base once — who you are, what you offer, prices, how to join, your links — and the AI replies to DMs in your tone, in whatever language the person writes in, voice notes included.
- DMs: answers questions 24/7 and sends the right link or offer card.
- Comments: when someone comments your keyword, it replies publicly and sends the DM — see comment-to-DM.
- Story mentions and replies: a thank-you DM the moment someone tags you.
- Conversation starters and a menu: up to 4 tap-to-ask questions and a 5-item menu inside Instagram.
- You stay in charge: reply by hand and the AI pauses for that chat; upset or unusual messages are flagged to you.
Auto-reply message examples you can copy
Welcome (first message)
Hey! 👋 Thanks for reaching out. I’m an automated assistant for [your name] — ask me anything about prices, sessions or how to join, and I’ll answer right away.
Price question
Great question! The 6-week program is $199, or 2 payments of $105. Want the link to sign up, or a quick summary of what’s included first?
Link request
Here you go 👉 [link]. If you have any questions before you sign up, just reply here.
After hours
Thanks for your message! I’m offline right now, but this assistant can answer most questions. For anything personal, I’ll reply myself tomorrow morning.
Brand collaboration
Thanks for thinking of me! 🙌 Could you share the brand, the deliverables, your timeline and the budget? I’ll get back to you within 2 days.
Rules to know before you automate
- The 24-hour window. Meta lets businesses message someone within 24 hours of their last message. After that, a person can still reply manually for up to 7 days using Meta’s human-agent option — automations can’t. All the numbers: Instagram DM limits.
- Say it’s automated. Meta requires automated chats to disclose it where the law asks (it names California and Germany) and recommends it everywhere.
- People message first. Automations answer people who comment, reply or DM — you can’t cold-message strangers through the API.
- Always leave a way to a human. Meta asks apps to let people reach a person.
Why your Instagram auto reply isn’t working
- The account is personal, not Business or Creator.
- A keyword reply didn’t fire because of capitalisation (Business Suite keywords are case-sensitive) or the message didn’t contain the exact word.
- The away message was sent instead — preset replies win over keyword replies.
- It’s a Business Suite keyword reply, which waits 15 minutes — and is skipped if you answered first.
- Meta Business Agent is on, which pauses your other Inbox automations.
- The person last wrote more than 24 hours ago, so automated messages can’t be delivered.
Questions people ask
Can you set an auto reply on Instagram?
Yes, on a professional (Business or Creator) account. Instagram has saved replies and up to four FAQs in chats, and Meta Business Suite adds instant replies, away messages and keyword replies. For replies to any question, in your own words, you can connect an AI tool such as ohyap.
How do I set up automatic replies on Instagram DMs?
For fixed answers, use Meta Business Suite on a computer: Inbox → Automations, then create an instant reply, an away message or a keyword reply. For answers to anything people ask, connect an AI auto-responder through Meta’s official API and give it a Knowledge Base to answer from.
Can Instagram auto reply to comments?
Partly. Meta Business Suite (desktop) has a “comment to message” automation that replies to comments containing specific hashtags. For any keyword — with a public reply, a DM with your link, follow checks and AI answers — tools on Meta’s API do it. This is called comment-to-DM.
Is Instagram auto reply free?
Instagram’s saved replies, FAQs and Business Suite automations are free. ohyap’s Free plan adds AI replies, comment-to-DM and story replies for $0 with 200 messages a month; Creator is $15/month for 10,000.
Can I auto reply on a personal Instagram account?
No. Auto replies and messaging tools need a professional account. Switching to a Creator or Business account is free and doesn’t affect your posts or followers.
Why isn’t my Instagram auto reply working?
The usual reasons: a personal account, a keyword that doesn’t match exactly (Business Suite keywords are case-sensitive), an away message taking priority, the 15-minute wait on keyword replies, Meta Business Agent pausing other automations, or a chat older than 24 hours.
