These numbers are far above what a creator or small business sends — they exist to stop abuse, not to ration normal use. In practice the real limits are the rules below about who you can message and when.
How many DMs can you send a day by hand?
Instagram doesn’t say, and any exact number you read is a guess. What Instagram does do is limit accounts whose behaviour looks automated or spammy, and new accounts tend to hit those limits sooner than established ones. Signs you’ve hit one: messages that won’t send, a “try again later” notice, or a temporary block on messaging.
- Write to people who expect to hear from you. Replies to people who messaged you, commented or reacted to your story are what DMs are for.
- Don’t paste the same message to dozens of people. Identical text, especially with a link, is the pattern spam filters look for.
- Slow down on a new account. Build up gradually instead of sending a burst on day one.
- Lead with words, not a link. A first message that is only a URL looks like spam and gets reported.
How long can an Instagram DM be?
For messages sent through Meta’s API — every automation tool — the limit is 1,000 bytes of text. Plain English letters take one byte each, so that is about 1,000 characters; accented letters take two bytes and most emoji four, so the real limit is lower if you use them. Instagram doesn’t publish a separate limit for messages typed in the app. Either way, the messages that get answered are short: one idea, one question, one link.
Who you’re allowed to message, and when
- People message first. A business can only message someone after they messaged the account — or commented, replied to a story or tapped a click-to-Direct ad. Cold DMs to strangers aren’t possible through the API.
- The 24-hour window. After someone’s last message you have 24 hours to reply. When their first message comes from a click-to-Direct ad, the window can last up to 7 days.
- The human agent window. A person (not an automation) can still reply for up to 7 days using Meta’s human-agent option.
- Comments. One private reply per comment, sent within 7 days of the comment — that is how comment-to-DM works.
- Say it’s automated. Where the law requires it, automated chats must say so at the start of a conversation; Meta recommends it everywhere.
Can Instagram block you for sending DMs?
Yes — temporarily, if your messages look like spam, and for longer if an account keeps breaking the rules. Instagram doesn’t publish how long a messaging block lasts. If you see one: stop sending, don’t try to work around it with another tool, and resume slowly with replies to people who wrote to you. If you think it’s a mistake, the notice usually includes a way to tell Instagram.
Ways to reach more people without hitting limits
- Let them come to you. “Comment PLAN and I’ll send it” turns every interested person into someone you’re allowed to message.
- Use story replies and mentions. Both open a conversation you can answer.
- Add conversation starters. Tap-to-ask questions make it easy to write first.
- Answer fast. A reply inside the 24-hour window keeps the conversation — and the sale — alive. An AI auto-reply answers in seconds, at 3am too.
Questions people ask
How many DMs can you send on Instagram per day?
Instagram doesn’t publish a daily number for messages typed by hand; it limits accounts whose activity looks like spam, and new accounts sooner. Through Meta’s official API, tools can send up to 300 text messages a second per account — but only to people who messaged first, within the messaging window.
Is there a DM limit for business accounts?
Business and creator accounts follow the same anti-spam rules as everyone, plus Meta’s API limits when they use automation: 300 text messages a second, 750 private replies to comments an hour, and an inbox that stops showing new messages past 72,000 messages sent and received.
What is the character limit for Instagram DMs?
Messages sent through Meta’s API can be up to 1,000 bytes — about 1,000 plain English characters, fewer with accented letters or emoji. Instagram doesn’t publish a separate limit for messages typed in the app.
Can Instagram ban you for sending too many DMs?
It can restrict messaging temporarily when activity looks like spam — many identical messages, unsolicited links, sudden bursts from a new account — and take stronger action against repeated abuse. Replying to people who wrote to you first is never the problem.
How long does an Instagram DM block last?
Instagram doesn’t publish a fixed length. Stop sending, don’t switch tools to get around it, and resume slowly. If you believe it’s a mistake, the notice usually includes a way to tell Instagram.
Do DM limits apply to automation tools?
Yes. Tools on Meta’s official API are bound by its rate limits and messaging rules — they can only message people who reached out first, inside the messaging window. That makes them safer than sending bulk messages by hand.
