Comment-to-DM: send the link the moment someone comments

“Comment GUIDE and I’ll send it to you” is the most effective call to action on Instagram right now. Comments lift the post’s reach; the DM delivers what you promised and starts a conversation. Here is how comment-to-DM works, the rules Meta sets, and how to set it up — free — in a few minutes.

In short

  • Someone comments your keyword on a post or reel; an automation replies under the comment and sends them a private DM with your link.
  • It runs on Meta’s official API: one private reply per comment, within 7 days of the comment; follow-ups only once they reply.
  • Pick a short, unusual keyword, say it in the caption and on screen, and answer publicly so others see it works.
  • You can ask people to follow, or leave an email, before the link — after they tap the button in the first DM.

How comment-to-DM works

  1. 1You post a reel or photo with a call to action: “Comment PLAN and I’ll DM you the free 7-day plan.”
  2. 2Someone comments “plan please 🙏”.
  3. 3Within seconds the automation replies under their comment (“Just sent it to your DMs! 💌”) so everyone scrolling sees it works.
  4. 4They get a private message with a short line and a button to open the link — or a question first, if you want their email.
  5. 5If they reply with a question, the conversation continues — by AI or by you.

Under the hood this is Meta’s private replies feature: a business can send one private message to a person in response to their comment. It is the official, approved way to do it — no scraping, no password sharing.

Can you do it without a tool?

A little. Meta Business Suite on a computer has a comment to message automation that replies to comments containing specific hashtags. It is free and worth knowing about. What it doesn’t do is match plain words like “PLAN”, rotate public replies, check that someone follows you, collect an email or answer the questions people send back — that is what comment-to-DM tools add.

Why it works so well

  • Comments are a strong reach signal. A call to action that asks for a comment makes the post travel further.
  • The DM is where people buy. A link in a DM gets opened far more than a link in bio three taps away.
  • It starts a real conversation. Many people reply with a question — that is where coaching calls get booked and courses get sold.
  • It works while you sleep. The reel posted at 9pm still delivers at 3am.

The rules Meta sets

  • One private reply per comment, sent within 7 days of the comment.
  • You can send more messages only after the person replies — and then within 24 hours of their reply.
  • Rate limits are generous for normal accounts: Meta allows up to 750 private replies an hour on posts and reels per account.
  • Automated messages should say they are automated, and people must always be able to reach a human.

Set it up in ohyap (about two minutes)

1

Choose the post

A specific post or reel, any post, or “the next one I publish” — handy when you’re about to go live with a launch.

2

Choose the keyword

One or more words. ohyap matches them as whole words in any capitalisation, inside longer comments — “PLAN!!” and “send the plan pls” both count, “planet” doesn’t. Or reply to every comment.

3

Write the public reply

Add a few variations; ohyap rotates them so a hundred identical replies don’t look like spam.

4

Write the DM

One warm line and a button. Optionally ask them to follow, or to leave their email or phone, before the link.

5

Add the link and switch it on

ohyap tracks clicks on it, so you can see which post actually drove sign-ups.

Want people to start the same automation without commenting? Every keyword automation also gets its own DM link and QR code — put it in your bio, a YouTube description or on a flyer.

The same steps work for story replies (someone replies to your story) and post shares (someone shares your post) — and if a commenter asks something your keyword doesn’t cover, the AI answers from your Knowledge Base. See Instagram auto reply for the DM side.

Short, unusual words work best — avoid “yes” or “me” on their own, which people type for other reasons.

Mistakes that cost you

  • The keyword is only in the caption. Put it on screen too — most people watch with the caption closed.
  • A bare link in the DM. Add one line of context; links with no message look like spam and get reported.
  • No public reply. People who don’t see the reply assume it doesn’t work and don’t comment.
  • Asking for a follow with no reason. “Follow so you don’t miss part 2” works; “follow first” on its own feels like a toll.
  • Two tools on one post. If ManyChat and another tool both watch the same keyword, people get two DMs.

Questions people ask

How do I automatically DM someone who comments on Instagram?

Connect an Instagram professional account to a tool built on Meta’s official API, pick the post and the keyword, write the DM and switch it on. When someone comments the keyword, the tool replies under the comment and sends them a private message. With ohyap this takes about two minutes and works on the Free plan.

Is comment-to-DM allowed by Instagram?

Yes. It uses Meta’s private replies feature: one private message per comment, sent within 7 days of the comment. Further messages are allowed only after the person replies, within 24 hours of their reply.

Does comment-to-DM work on reels?

Yes — on reels and on regular posts. In ohyap you can attach an automation to a specific post, to every post, or to the next post you publish.

Do people have to type the exact keyword?

In ohyap, no: the keyword is matched as a whole word in any capitalisation, even inside a longer comment. “PLAN please” triggers PLAN; “planet” doesn’t. You can also choose to reply to every comment.

Can I make people follow me before they get the link?

Yes. Turn on the follow step: the first DM has a button, and when they tap it ohyap checks whether they follow you before sending the link. Meta only allows that check after the person has tapped or replied.

How many DMs can comment-to-DM send?

Meta allows up to 750 private replies an hour per account on posts and reels. On ohyap’s Free plan you get 200 messages a month; Creator ($15/month) includes 10,000, with unlimited contacts.
