Automation is allowed, encouraged even — Meta built an API for it. What gets accounts restricted is not automation, it is a handful of specific behaviours. Know these five and you will never have a problem.
1. The customer must message first
You can reply to a person who contacted you. You cannot start a conversation with someone who did not. There is no legitimate tool that lets you message a cold list, and anything promising that is going to cost you the account.
2. The 24-hour window
After someone messages you, you have roughly a day to reply. After that the window closes until they write again. This is why "follow-up sequences" that message people days later do not belong on Instagram.
Comments have a rule of their own: Meta allows one private reply per comment, within 7 days of it. The details are in the comment-to-DM guide.
3. Links in cold messages are the real risk
The fastest way to get reported is to send a bare link as the first thing a stranger receives. Answer the question, then offer the link. A message that reads like a person is one nobody reports.
4. Say that it is automated
If someone asks whether they are talking to a bot, the honest answer is required — and it costs you nothing. People already assume it. What annoys them is being told otherwise.
5. Vary your public replies
Forty identical comment replies under one post is a pattern. Rotate a few versions. It reads better to humans too.
What a safe setup looks like
- Official API access, not a tool that logs in as you.
- Replies only to people who wrote first.
- Sending paced, and backing off automatically when limits appear.
- You can take over any chat at any moment.
