Comment-to-DM: turning one reel into a week of conversations

The single highest-return automation for any Instagram business, explained end to end — what to put in the caption, which word to pick, and what to send.

Comment-to-DM is the one automation worth setting up first. Someone comments a word under your post, they get a private message with what they asked for, and a public reply tells everyone else it works. One reel can start a hundred conversations without you opening the app.

This post is the playbook. Meta’s rules on private replies, caption templates and keyword ideas by niche are in the full comment-to-DM guide.

Pick a word people will actually type

Short, obvious, and impossible to type by accident. PRICE, MENU, LINK, RATES, GUIDE. Avoid words that show up in normal comments — "info" works, "yes" does not, because half your compliments contain it.

  • One word is better than a phrase. People will not type "send me the link please".
  • Put it in the caption AND say it out loud in the reel.
  • Use the same word across a campaign so it becomes a habit.

Write the caption like an instruction

The caption is the whole funnel. "Comment MENU and I will send it over" outperforms a clever line every time, because it tells people exactly what to do and exactly what they get.

What to send in the DM

Answer first, link second. Open with the thing they asked for in plain text, then attach the card with the button. A message that is only a link looks like spam and gets ignored, or worse, reported.

1

The opening line

One warm sentence with the actual information. "Here’s tonight’s menu — deals start at Rs 450 and we deliver till 1am."

2

The card

A photo, the price, and one button that opens your page. One card, not five.

3

The follow-up

Let the AI keep answering. Most people reply with a second question, and that reply is where the sale happens.

The public reply matters more than you think

When someone else scrolls the comments and sees "Just sent it to your DMs", they comment too. Rotate a few versions of that line so the same sentence does not appear forty times under one post — it looks automated in the bad way, and Instagram notices repetition.

Measure the right thing

Comments are vanity. Count how many people opened the link and how many replied a second time. If lots comment but few reply, your DM is asking them to do too much work.
